Department of Microbiology


  • Microbiology department existed as part of the department of pathology and bacteriology since 1946. It was founded in the year 1977 under the stewardship of Dr. (Smt.) Prema K. Murti. During the tenure of Dr. (Smt.) Prema Murti post graduate seats for M.D. (Microbiology), M. Sc. (by research) and Ph. D. (Microbiology) were offered for the first time. The department was equipped with modular fluorescent phase contrast microscope, ELISA reader, ultra cold deep freezer and a computer. Photomicrography facility was made available to the entire institution. Additional area was made available in 2004 for Voluntary Confidential Counselling & Testing Centre (VCCTC) activity. CD4/CD8 testing facilities are made available since March 2005.

    Dr. (Mrs.) G. V. Koppikar was Professor & Head of Microbiology from September 1992 to November 2004. Dr. (Mrs.) K. Saraswathi was Professor & Head of Microbiology from December 2004 to September 2006. Dr Jayanthi S Shastri presently heads the department since October 2006. She takes keen interest in hospital infection control, External & Internal quality control; all activities related to ICTC including NABL accredation and Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP). The Molecular diagnostic Lab at Kasturba Infectious Disease Hospital was commissioned under her expert guidance and supervision.

  • Department timings: 9 am to 4.30 pm
  • Emergency lab: 4.30 pm to 8 am

Services offered :

  • All clinical samples (OPD & Inpatients) are accepted on all working days from 9 am to 12.00 noon. Emergency samples are accepted from 4 pm onwards in the E Lab situated in G Building, 1st Floor.
  • Processing of samples, identification of the clinical isolates and Antibiotic Sensitivity Test (AST) is done as per the standard protocols and reports are dispatched to the respective Wards/Units on daily basis. On an average 85,000 samples are being processed annually towards patient care.
  • OT Surveillance, Sterility checking and testing of disinfectants are done as a part of Hospital infection control surveillance.

Special Facilities

  • Integrated Counselling & Testing Center (ICTC) for Counselling & HIV testing is made available through Mumbai District AIDS control society.
  • CD4 facilities are made available free of cost for patients on ART.
  • Sputum samples for detection of pulmonary tuberculosis are processed in collaboration with RNTCP.
  • Food handlers from various eating houses in Mumbai are screened regularly for communicable diseases.
  • Surveillance of Nosocomial outbreaks.
  • Our department plays key role in formulating guidelines for Hospital Infection Control / Solid Waste Management and implementation of the same.

Teaching activities

Undergraduate teaching:

  • Lectures are held for undergraduate (M.B.B.S., B.D.S., O.T., P.T.) students. Practical tutorials are held for undergraduate (M.B.B.S., B.D.S.) & D.M.L.T. students. Classes for Nursing students are also carried out by the departmental teaching staff. Over 550 students at any given time, from various faculties get the benefit of regular teaching in the department of microbiology.

Post Graduate Teaching:

  • Post-graduate seminars/Journal Review is held twice every week. Post graduates participate in Seminars, Symposium and Inter-college meetings. Microbiology Department is recognized for M.D. Microbiology, M.Sc. Microbiology by research and PhD Microbiology of Mumbai University.
