Vision
To be a trusted centre of excellence in transfusion services ensuring ethical, safe, adequate and equitable access to safe and quality blood and blood components for every patient in need.
Mission
• To ensure safe, effective, and timely availability of blood and blood components through standardized
and validated processes and to comply with FDA, NABH and SBTC regulatory requirements for donor selection,
testing, storage, issue, and transfusion practices.
• To promote voluntary, non-remunerated blood donation and maintain an ethically recruited donor pool.
• To implement quality assurance, documentation, traceability, and hemovigilance across all blood bank activities.
• To ensure patient safety and donor care through trained personnel, infection control, and risk-management practices
and to maintain 24×7 emergency transfusion supportwith accountability and transparency in service delivery.
• To support education, training, and continuous improvement in transfusion medicine within the public healthcare system.
Staff Members
Services & Availability
The blood bank operates 24×7 to support patients and blood donors at all times. The following are the services provided:
– Blood grouping for voluntary blood donors
– Blood grouping & cross-matching for inpatients
– Direct and indirect Coombs test
– Organization of outdoor voluntary blood donation drives
– Indoor voluntary blood donation
– Serological testing namely testing for malaria, syphilis, HIV, HBsAg and HCV of the collected blood units
– Preparation and issue of blood & blood components namely red cell concentrate (RCC), Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP),
Normal human plasma (NHP), Random donor platelets (RDP) and cryoprecipitate
– Single donor platelet (SDP) by Apheresis procedure
– Rh titres for pregnant women.
Quality & Accreditation
The Blood Centre at B.Y.L. Nair Charitable Hospital and Topiwala National Medical College has received NABH accreditation from July 2025-July 2028. This means high standards in testing, handling, and transfusion practices for both donors and recipients.
Also, the Blood centre is approved as per Food and Drug administration (FDA) norms.
FDA license is valid till 31 December 2027.
