Department of Cardiology, Topiwala National Medical College and BYL Nair CH hospital Mumbai , Established in 1950 by a special resolution
of Bombay Municipal Corporation. 1st Hospital to have such specialized department in Mumbai.
Padma Vibhushan Dr. V.V. Shah, Honorary Professor of Cardiology and former Physician to the President of India and Governor of Maharashtra
state was the 1stHead of Department of Cardiology having joined in 1950.
Dr R C Hansoti joined the department in 1962 as Honorary Assistant Professor and Dr K D Shah joined the department in 1966 as Honorary
Assistant Professor.
Dr Satyavan Sharma, Dr Lilamben Shah and Dr Ajay S Chaurasia (1997-till date)- successive Head of Department of Cardiology.
Under the leadership of each Professor, department has made significant progress.
Initially started with Intensive Coronary Care Unit with facilities for monitoring of 3 patients at a time.
Cardiac Catheterization & Angiography initially carried out in Radiology Department.
Vector Cardiography Machine with diagnostic facilities established in 1979.
First echocardiography machine installed in 1982.
Installation of Cardiac catheterization laboratory done thrice in 1994, 2005 and 2016.
State of art cardiac catheterization laboratory with latest technology installed in 2016.
Echocardiography and Doppler machines established in 1992, 2009 followed by latest state of the art EPIQ 7c echocardiography machine in
2018, followed by MINDRAY echocardiography machine for the bed side evaluation made available from the generous donation through INDIAN
HUME PIPES LIMITED in the year 2021.
Currently upgraded to 14 bedded dedicated Intensive Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU) with 3 special rooms in ICCU- total strength of 20 beds and 50
bedded dedicated cardiac wards.
Facilities for all complex coronary interventions with latest advanced modalities including intravascular imaging and rotablation available.
Centre for structural interventions as well as Cardiac pacing and resynchronization.
NMC/MCI recognized teaching institute for superspecialisation DM course in Cardiology under MUHS Nashik with annual intake of 3 students.
Teaching institute for BPMT in Cardiology course under MUHS Nashik for training of technicians.
Participation in various trials and registries.
Numerous national and international publications including original/research articles and rare complex case reports.
Participation in various conferences.
Live relay of complex coronary and renal angioplasties in national CSI conference in association with Asia Pacific Cardiology Society in Dec 2005
with delegates and facilities from 33 countries.
Establishment of another 8 bedded well equipped cardiac care ward in process through generous donation from MAHANAGAR GAS LIMITED.

1.    Admission and Management of various critical heart disease patients like acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), Acute coronary syndromes , Heart failure, fatal Arrhythmias, Pulmonary embolism, Aortic dissection, Chocked prosthetic heart valve, congenital heart diseases patients, peripheral vascular diseases including renal artery intervention etc.

A. Coronary angiography via femoral and radial routes.
B. Percutaneous coronary angioplasty
-Coronary angioplasty and stenting including Left main stenosis, Chronic Total occlusion and complex coronary lesions.
-Rotablation when required in heavily calcified lesions.
-Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR) for intermediate severity lesions.
