The Department of Preventive and
Social Medicine as it was called till 2014, is now officially known as the Department of Community Medicine. Dr. V. N Panse was the first Head of Department, the baton of responsibility was later passed on to the next
stalwart Dr. Saroj Jha. During her long tenure, she established Community
Medicine as a coveted academic stream and many graduates joined for Postgraduate Degrees and Diplomas. As per the ROME scheme introduced by GOI in
1979, 2 Urban Health Centres were established, 1 each at Shivaji Nagar and
Cheetah Camp. Both Urban Health Centres (UHC) collaborated with various Departments of BYL Nair Hospital to ensure delivery of not only primary health
care but specialist medical services of Dermatology, Ophthalmogy, Dentistry, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Paediatrics to
the slum community attached. The importance of the subject is
reinforced and emphasized being inculcated right from the foundation course,
every year through 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of MBBS course in the new Competency-based Medical Education of National Medical Commission (NMC) implemented since
2019. Community Medicine is also a compulsory subject in other paramedical
streams of Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Nursing.
With Dr. Nalini Pai at the helm from
1983-1998, the Department got involved in conducting community health camps with
as many as 40 camps/year. Also, many relief camps were held for the victims of the Bhuj earthquake in 2001. The child helpline 1098 was established in 1998 in
collaboration with Aamrae (NGO) supported by UNICEF during the tenure of Dr. Daniel
as Head of Department.
Dr. Aras became the Head of Department
in 1988 and a joint conference of MCIAPSM and MCIPHA was held successfully in
2003. During the deluge of 2005, the Department played a significant role in
flood relief providing medical relief for flood-affected areas in Mumbai
continuously for 3 months.
With the arrival of Dr. S.R.Suryawanshi as the Head of Department in 2009, a New Rural Health Training Centre was started in collaboration with the NGO Prasad Chikitsa In 2010. In 2011, the Department was the first amongst MCGM colleges to get ISO 9001 certification and also the 1st MCGM college to get PhD teacher recognition. With the onset of the COVID pandemic in March 2020, the department contributed significantly to providing the COVID real-time data for MIS and strategy planning, later extended to mucormycosis. Series of training workshops were held for staff nurses and labour staff in the initial wave. Department was involved in the project for follow up on potential plasma donors, which was used for the treatment of COVID cases. Posting and distribution of interns during COVID was also handled smoothly. The Junior Lecturers played a significant role in the ward war rooms being available 24*7. The department started the COVID vaccination centre on 16th JANUARY 2021 and so far 173000 vaccinations have been carried out.
The Department is headed currently by Dr. Rujuta Hadaye, after the superannuation of Dr. S.R. Suryawanshi.
In Jan
2024, 3 new PHCs (Primary Health Centres) were affiliated to the institute
namely RHTC(Rural Health Training Centre) at Kharbao, PHC Kon and PHC Nilje.
These are within 50 Km distance from the parent institute. They have provision
of hostel for both male and female resident doctors and mess facilities.
Also, the
Urban Health Training Centre at Shivajinagar was handed over to public health
department, BMC in July 2023 for upgradation of the services.
The
department has in the last 3 years conducted high profile community projects
namely Mega city survey - National Mental Health Survey (Phase 2), Measles Serosurvey
of mothers of Shivajinagar, Mumbai and Mumbai Serosurvey-6 for Covid-19.
