The Department of Gastroenterology was first of its kind in the country, established by Dr F P Antia in 1954. Since its inception, the department has rendered excellent clinical care, endoscopic work and contributed important research data in the Indian context. Following Dr Antias retirement as Professor & Head in 1974, Professor H G Desai, Professor R H Kalro and Professor Dr. Shobna Bhatia were the Heads of the Department successively till 13th March 2006.  Dr Pravin M. Rathi took over the Department on 14th March 2006 and is presently in- charge of the Department.
First in India
The first Gastroenterology department to be established in the country in 1954. Dr Antia pioneered the procedure of peritoneoscopy / laparoscopy in the country.
First in the city of Mumbai- The Department was the first to establish to offer services of ERCP among all teaching Hospitals in Mumbai and now this department is a major referral centre for all kinds of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures from all over Mumbai and other states as well. This department is the first department in Mumbai to be recognized for DM in Gastroenterology in 1986. Dr H G Desai was conferred the degree of D.Sc. (Doctor of Science) by the University of Mumbai for his work on gastric acid secretion. In recognition of the outstanding work and contribution of the department, the Indian Society of Gastroenterology awarded the Pfizer Amirchand Trophy for the best department in the country in 1980. It is the only Department in Mumbai which has received this honor so far.
This department is first government hospital to offer advanced endoscopy services like Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM), and Single Operator Cholangioscopy in western India.

Established the dose response curves of gastric acid after stimulation with histamine.
Relation of dental plaque to spread of Helicobacter pylori by oro-oral transmission (in collaboration with Microbiology Department).
Seroepidemiology of Helicobacter pylori in India (in collaboration with Microbiology Department).
Change in epidemiology of hepatitis A in India with relation to socio-economic status (in collaboration with Microbiology Department).
Epidemiology of non ulcer dyspepsia in Indian subjects.
Risk of dysplasia in the esophageal squamous mucosa in tobacco and alcohol abusers (in collaboration with Pathology Department).
Numerous papers on varied manifestations of Abdominal tuberculosis.
Contribution in liver abnormalities in COVID-19 patients.
Contribution to the field of Gastroenterology-
Dr. Antia is a founder and member of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology. Along with Dr. B.J. Vakil and Dr. H.G. Desai, he established the Indian Journal of Gastroenterology in 1980. The Journal is the leading Gastroenterology Journal in the country. Dr. Shobna Bhatia is the Associate Editor of the Journal.

The Department of Gastroenterology with the endoscopy rooms is located in the OPD building, 7th floor. The male ward (No. 18) and the female ward (No. 31) are situated on the same floor. Total indoor capacity is 30 beds. The Gastroenterology OPD No. 17 is situated on the first floor of the OPD building and is conducted on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9.00 to 11-30 AM.
Dedicated Liver opd (OPD 36) is conducted on every Tuesday at 2nd floor, 1.30-3.30 pm
Also conduct Liver OPD at Kasturba Hospital- every Monday and Thursday at 3.30 pm - 5.30 pm
