activity:
Undergraduates:
The Department of General Surgery undertakes teaching programs for the
following UG degree courses offered by MUHS and recognized by MCI.
MBBS: (I/C Dr. Rajeshkumar C. Mahey)
150 students
admitted per year, 4 and 1/2 year course.
Teaching
consists of didactic lectures, guest lectures, exposure to patients via 4 clinical ward rotations, OPD and theatre rotations, tutorials, and attendance at
emergencies.
Assessment is
done continually throughout the year in the form of ward exams, internal
assessments, terminal exams, and prelims. Final MBBS exams are conducted twice a
year by the MUHS.
UG's
participate in an introductory course on Newer Techniques & Technologies in
Surgery.
They are
encouraged to be part of departmental research projects and attend CME's, quiz
competitions, and conferences as well.
Postgraduates
MS (General Surgery): (I/C Dr. D. J. Balsarkar)
14 new students
registered per year. Admission is based on merit at the NEET-PG exam. (Please
consult the MUHS website for details)
This
is a three-year full-time stipendiary residency program. Residents stay on
campus and are available on duty 24 hrs. Free on-campus accommodation and leave
benefits are provided. Residents are registered with a PG guide for their
thesis and rotate every six months through various units, with a rotation
through three super-specialties as well. (total 6 posts)
The PG teaching program includes:
Small-group
teaching, seminars, monthly mortality meetings and surgical audit, journal
clubs, ward clinics, and a supervision of operative procedures.
Use
of the departmental library with free internet is encouraged.
New
residents undergo an orientation program with a pre-and post-test.
There
is an annual in-service examination.
Residents
attend training courses in trauma care, use of staplers, basic and advanced
laparoscopy, basic surgical skills, endoscopy, use of new technologies, etc.
They
participate in workshops on Research Methodology conducted by the METT cell.
Residents are
actively guided and encouraged to present departmental work in local, national, and international meetings, and to publish in national and international
journals.
They along with staff members may be deputed by the BMC to provide on-site
surgical services in the community when required.
Senior
resident/ Senior Medical Officer (bonded)/ House officer (7th posts) are
available for those who have completed a recognized three-year surgical
residency.Details

Interns:
(I/C Dr. Rajesh Patil) undergo an orientation program and basic CPR/ BLS training during their surgery posting. They are allowed to assist and perform minor ward procedures under supervision.

Observership:
1-3 months observership,
clinical internships or student exchanges are available in the surgery. Details are
available with the NRE section, TNMC.
CME & Research:
The Department conducts regular CME programs,
seminars, and workshops.
Eminent members of the profession are invited for
guest lectures and surgical demonstrations.
Research activities consist of
departmental projects, post-graduate thesis, and participation in
pharmaceutical clinical trials. The Nair Golden Jubilee Research Foundation
(NGJRF) assists with these projects. All research protocols must receive Ethics
Committee approval.
