B.Y.L. NAIR HOSPITAL AND TOPIWALA NATIONAL MEDICAL COLLEGE
History
The ophthalmology department was established in 1923 with Dr.
C.R. Athavale in-charge of the department. He was succeeded by Dr. Hiralal
Patel who was Honorary Professor & HOD (1945-1957). In 1945, an important
landmark, a full-fledged ophthalmic unit was established and 16 beds were
exclusively reserved for ophthalmic patients.
Dr. A. M. Gokhale then took
over as Honorary Professor and Head of the department (1957-1971). Dr. Gokhale
was a stern disciplinarian and expanded the ophthalmology department
considerably. He did the first keratoplasty in Mumbai in 1951 and specialized
in ERG. He continued his association with these institutions even after
retirement.
Dr.Abreu was Honorary
Ophthalmologist from 1969 to 1970 & was the first to head the second unit
which started in 1969. In the same year i.e. in 1969 with Maharashtra
Government approval, Eye bank was started under Cornea Grafting Act, 1969 and
is functional till date.
Dr.Piyush Dixit succeeded Dr.
Gokhale as Honorary Professor and Head (1971- 1985). Mobile Ophthalmic Van, the
only van of its kind in Mumbai was made available for community ophthalmic
services in 1975.
Dr.(Smt) Gynam Murthy then
took over the department as Professor and Head in 1985 & continued till
2004. She played an important role for having an in-house Ophthalmology OT at
B.Y.L. Nair Hospital.
Mobile Ophthalmic Van
was replaced with a new well equipped van in June 2004 with the donation from
Lions club of Byculla.
Later, Dr. H.L. Trivedi, Associate Professor was Ag. HOD from
Aug.2004 till Sept.2005.
During the
tenure of Dr. A.D. Nicholson (Professor & Head from 2005 to 2016), major
equipments were procured through donation through Lions Club International
Foundation (LCIF) for upgradation of the Ophthalmology department. These
equipments included Operating Microscope with teaching aid, Fundus camera,
Green Laser, Video Indirect Ophthalmoscope for treatment of Retinal diseases,
Nd: YAG Laser, chair units, slit lamp biomicroscope, Autorefractometer, A scan,
digital vision charts etc.
Specular microscope, Imaging slit lamp biomicroscope, DLEK &
DSEK instruments were procured first in Nair Hospital amongst the MCGM
Hospitals. Also, Nair Ophthalmology department was the first among MCGM
hospitals to perform DSEK surgery.
Around this time, Nair Ophthalmology Department was highly
preferred by top rankers for PG training.
Dr. Saroj Sahdev (Professor & Head from Sep.2016 to Apr.2021)
started MUHS recognised Fellowship in Vitreoretina since 2017, the only BMC
hospital offering this fellowship.
Combined phacoemulsification with vitrectomy and endolaser
machine, the first of its kind in the country, was procured by the department
in January 2020.
Dr. Nayana A. Potdar has taken the charge of the department as Professor and Head since 20th May 2022.

Unit
The Ophthalmology department has two working Units. The out-patient Department and Operation theatre functions on all 6 days of the week, with each clinical unit offering services on alternate days. The total bed strength is 60. The outdoor and indoor eye care services renders routine, special as well as emergency services on all days of the week. It is a renowned centre for treatment of vitreo retinal diseases.

Community Ophthalmic Services:
The community Ophthalmic services rendered to the slum population of Greater Mumbai is through the Mobile Van Services of our department to the Centers at Cheeta Camp, Shivaji Nagar. Also in co-ordination with various voluntary Organisations regular Eye check-up Camps are conducted contributing towards the National Programme for Prevention of Blindness. Regular operative sessions are also held in these Eye Camps with good visual outcome. The Mobile Ophthalmic Van Services are improvised by the installation of various portable Ophthalmic equipments within the van, all of which are donated by a number of voluntary organisations.
Collaborative work:
B.Y.L.Nair Hospital has an Eye Bank established in the year 1969. It is certified and registered under subsection (1) of section 24 of transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994 (42 of 1994) by Govt. of Maharashtra (Dated 29.9.98). Ophthalmic department in BYL Nair Hospital is attending to Enucleating calls & keratoplasties are done for the needy patients. We also register the cases with Eye Bank Co-ordination and Research Centre, Haji Bacchooali Hospital , Parel. Mumbai - 12.
Academic activities of the department range from undergraduate training programmes to advanced research projects, conducted to update the students and teaching faculties.
The department conducts regular Workshops, Seminars, Symposiums, Clinical meetings, Journal Clubs and Case presentations. There are Publications in various recongnised Journals. Members of the dept. actively participate in the local, zonal State, National and International ophthalmic academic/Scientific Workshops, advanced Courses and Conferences. This has enabled the staff and students to achieve academic excellence seen in the form of awards, merit ranks and prestigious positions secured at the National and International ophthalmic scenario.
