About the Department

The Department was started in 1948 under the able leadership of late Padma Bhushan Prof. L. H. Hiranandani. Prof. Hiranandani was instrumental in establishing the Head and Neck Oncology Services, and developed the Department so that observers and surgeons from all over the world would come and visit him to learn, and was solely responsible for putting the name of the same on the World Map. He was also responsible for establishing the Audiology and Speech Therapy School IN 1967, which was the first of its kind in Asia, and till date has been a centre for training both the Bachelors and Masters courses. He led the department till 1975. He was succeeded by his son Prof. Navin Hiranandani, who went on to head the department till 1983. Then came the era of Prof. Ashutosh Pusalkar in 1983, another dynamic and proactive surgeon, who further took the department to greater heights. He developed the faculties of Otology, besides furthering Head and Neck Oncology. Dr. Pusalkar has numerous middle ear prosthesis and techniques to his credit, and is an Internationally acclaimed ENT surgeon. In 1988, Prof. Dalbir Singh Grewal, was appointed the Head of Department, and he retained the post for a period of 18 years, till 2006. During his tenure, he conducted numerous surgical workshops, and organised various National conferences. He also authored a surgical atlas. Prof. Bachi Hathiram took over from Dr. Grewal in 2006, and heads the Department to date. With her mantra of teamwork she has been endlessly working to put the Department back on the International map. In her tenure, she has conducted numerous surgical workshops, organised various conferences, and published papers in national and International Journals. She has also authored various textbooks in ENT. The Department has received the ISO 9001:2000 certification, which is a first amongst the public sector ENT departments in university hospitals across the country. The department today is a referral centre for Head and Neck Surgery, Airway Surgery, Cochlear Implants, Vertigo, Skullbase surgery besides performing all routine ENT Surgeries.

Awards and achievements

Pioneering work done by the Department of ENT and Head and Neck Surgery

1) Entered into a public private partnership with Dr.Sultan Pradhan and Prince Aly Khan Hospital to start a comprehensive Oncosurgery programme in 2007. Our department has been running this comprehensive head and neck cancer programme since more than a decade.

2) Started Endoscopic Skull Base surgery and conducted several workshops in collaboration with Dr.C.E.Deopujari, eminent neurosurgeon at Bombay Hospital since 2007.

3) Trained under Dr.Phillipe Monnier, world famous airway surgeon from Switzerland to start the ' Airway Surgery Programme' in the department since 2008 and annually conduct ' Workshops on Airway Surgery' since then.

4) The department performed the first Cochlear implant under the Central Government ADIB scheme. The Cochlear Implant programme in the department started in 2010 under the able guidance of Dr.Milind Kirtane. Since then, our department has performed more than 500 cochlear implants successfully.

5) Nair Hospital is the first hospital in Mumbai to have a vestibular research laboratory.

6) Our department is the first department in the public sector in India to have the ISO certification.

7) Our department is the first department in Nair Hospital to start cadaveric dissection workshops in 2007, in conjunction with the Department of Anatomy and Forensic Medicine and has conducted several such workshops annually for rhinology, head and neck, skull base and airway.

8) The department has churned out an ENT syllabus textbook as well as reference books such as surgical atlas and surgical video atlas.
