About the Department

HISTORY

The Department of Pediatric Surgery was started as an independent department at Nair Hospital by Dr. Ashok Mathure in January 1993. MCI recognition was obtained and the first super speciality student joined in 1993. Thereafter, the department was headed by Prof. S. N. Oak (1999-2008). It was the first department to start and promote Pediatric laparoscopy in India. State of the art laparoscopic instruments with harmonic scalpel were procured during this period. Three international laparoscopic conferences were arranged in 2001, 2003 and 2004. Also the first robotic pediatric surgery was held at Nair hospital. ISO accreditations in BYL Nair hospital were acquired. At present, Prof. Dr. Hemanshi Shah is the Head of department.

• The Department is one of the finest departments in the country for quality patient care, teaching, training and research. The Department also has an excellent neonatal surgical intensive care unit.
• The Department is regularly represented in national associations and various societies, projecting the current status and the contribution in the field of pediatric surgery from a major teaching institution.
• Over the years, the aim of balancing educational curriculum with the surgical work has been maintained in Nair hospital
• Extensive work has been done in the field of research and development. Numerous publications have been published in national as well as international journals.
