On September 4 2021, we commemorate our centenary of service
in healthcare through Radiodiagnosis that traces its history back to 1968 when
first XRAY department was established, steered by our first Head of Department,
Dr Nerurker followed by Dr Daftary and Dr A.G.Naik.
During the
first 20 years, it offered a variety of specialized procedures and diagnostic
services like tomography, Dark Room Fluoroscopy and MIMER (state of the art
machine for neurological procedures) before additional services like USG, CT,
MRI and IR were made available. With advent of specialized technologies came
the first USG machine: Aloka Static scanner in 1984, first ever CT head scanner
in any BMC hospital at NAIR in 1983, first Siemens portable X ray machines (6)
in 1990.
With new
advances, our department introduced whole body CT machine in 1992, first color
doppler machine in BMC with Toshiba Ecocee in 1996. Other utilities were
installed in 21st century to provide topmost healthcare services which
commenced with installation of Philips MRI machine in 2001, GE Alpha RT
Mammography machine in 2013, AGFA DX-D600 Direct Digital Radiography machine in
year 2017, Shimadzu fluoroscopy machine in 2018.
Apart from providing state of the art services in public
healthcare, the department holds testimonies of renowned alumni having excelled
under the guidance of a remarkable teaching faculty.
The first ever batch of MD Radiodiagnosis was started in the
year 1968 itself. Besides MD Radiodiagnosis, the department also conducts MUHS
fellowship courses in neuroimaging, body imaging and USG color doppler. A
three-year bachelor course for radiography technicians (BPMT) is also available
in the department.
The department's contribution during the COVID -19 pandemic has also been phenomenal, being the first hospital that was converted into a dedicated COVID hospital in APRIL 2020, the X ray USG and CT services have been working round the clock for COVID patients.
