The department developed Mumbai city's first Post Anaesthesia Care Unit; today we have two such units that serve as step-down HDUs. We offer preanesthesia screening in our OPD. Our Anaesthesiology Lab has ABG analyser and PFT testing facilities. We have advanced difficult airway devices like fiberoptic bronchoscopes, LMAs, video laryngoscopes and apneic ventilation devices. There is a Transthoracic Oesophageal Echocardiography machine being used by the Cardia Anaesthesia team. We have a Cooled RF machine in the Pain Clinic for chronic pain management procedures. We also have an AI-enabled ultrasonography machine for regional anaesthesia.

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Anaesthesiology is a postgraduate program designed to train medical graduates in the science and practice of anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, critical care, and pain management. An NMC ( erstwhile MCI) recognized postgraduate MD Anatomy course was started in year 1966. The tenure of course is 3 years. Five seat are available each year. At present 9 post graduate students are pursuing the course in the department.

Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) is a standard diagnostic hearing test used to measure a person’s hearing sensitivity acrossfrom 250 Hz to 8,000 Hz sound frequencies. it gives Degree of hearing loss and Type of hearing loss. The multiple applications of PTA are to diagnose hearing loss, to screen/ monitor changes in hearing and to evaluate candidacy for hearing aids or other interventions. On average NAir Hospital conducts 30-40 audiometry daily.

Immittance Audiometry evaluates the status of middle ear system. Immittance testing focuses on the mechanical and reflexive responses of the ear. the test facilitates audiologists to evaluate ear canal volume, middle ear pressure, Eardrum mobility. And using parameters of testsing, it makes the differentiual diagnosis of middle ear conditions possible. the pathologes as presence of fluid behind the eardrum (otitis media), Eustachian tube dysfunction, Ossicular chain fixation/ discontinuity. on an average the department of Audiology and Speech therapy conducts 15-20 immittance tests.

Newborn Hearing Screening (NBHS) is a quick, painless test performed within the first few days of life to check whether a newborn may have hearing loss. Early detection is crucial because hearing is essential for normal speech, language, and cognitive development. The incidence of hearing loss in India is 6.3% among the newborn neonates. Hearing loss is a silent disorder. It normally comes to the parents’/caregivers’ knowledge only after about 2 years of age, by which time irreparable damage of language development has already occurred The Audiologist at Nair hospital, performs Otoacoustic Emission (OAE) screening at NICU and Obstetrics wards. Average 20-30 babies undergoes hearing screening and 8-10 are called for followup re-screening.

Speech therapy is a specialized type of therapy that helps individuals to improve their communication skills. It is provided by a certified and qualified speech-language pathologist (SLP) and can address a wide range of challenges related to language , speech and swallowing. The Speech Therapy is available to OPD and IPD cases. The Speech therapy department provides services in Nair hospital complex at different medical and surgical wards as well as to the Special school for Autism (AADI) of Nair hospital. Patients with delayed speech and language development associated with Autism, Mentally challenged and Hearing impairment, Misarticulation, Stammering and various voice disorders. Neurogenic speech and language disorderd cases are also assessed and treated at department.

Swallowing therapy is often called dysphagia therapy. It is a type of treatment provided by a speech-language pathologist (SLP) to help people who have difficulty chewing or swallowing food and liquids safely. A speech-language pathologist specializing in swallowing and dysphagia assessment provides different techniques and manoeuvres to the patient. The problem can result from stroke, neurological conditions, aging, head/neck cancer, or developmental issues. the patients complaints about coughing or choking while eating or drinking,taking a very long time to chew or swallow, drooling or difficulty managing saliva, weight loss due to difficulty eating, and frequent pneumonia or chest infections.

Speech audiometry is a type of hearing test that measures how well a person can detect, recognize, and understand spoken words. It is usually performed as part of a comprehensive hearing evaluation. speech audiometry helps to know how hearing loss affects real-world communication,whether hearing aids may help, What type of hearing loss is present, How well the auditory system processes speech.

Audiologist play important role in the life of person with hearing impairment. Cochlear implantation is one of the recent advances in rehabilitation of HI population. The audiologist at AST Department facilitates HI population of different ages from the stage of candidacy to Neural Response Telemetry (NRT) to mapping and rehabilitation. Neural Response Telemetry (NRT) is a test performed using a cochlear implant during surgically implantation prcedure to measure how the hearing nerve (auditory nerve) responds to electrical stimulation from the implant’s electrodes. Multiple cases from different pockets of country have benefitted from this facility.

Heraing Aid Trial (HAT) is a procedure of selcting appropriate hearing aid/s to the person with hearing impairment. HAT ensures the hearing aid is comfortable and effective, helps adjust the hearing aid to users daily needs, reduces the risk of buying a hearing aid that doesn’t work well for user, allows to compare two or more models if needed. Average 25-30 cases per month are the beneficiaries of this facility at Nair hospital.

Auditory Evoked Potentials (AEPs) are electrical responses generated by the auditory system when it is stimulasted by sound (auditory stimulus). These responses can be recorded using electrodes placed on the scalp. AEPs help audiologists understand how well the individual has hearing and his hearing pathway working. The AEP requires minimum participation of patient. AEPs are used for those who cannot or not willing of responding in other behavioral tests. Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR),Otoacoustic Evaluation (OAE),Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential(VEMP) and their variants are carried out in AST Department at Nair hospital. Average 45-50 cases per month takes benefit of the facility.

Vestibular Rehabilitation (VR) is a specialized form of therapy designed to reduce dizziness and improve balance and to train the part of the vestibular system and brain that controls balance and spatial orientation. patients visiting NAir hospital gets facilitated with various tests as Evoked potential tests VEMP and OVEMP as well as Behavioral tests like Tandem Gait, Dix Hallpike tests and so on. Post diagnosis the cases undergoes manuevers by treained vestibular rehabilitationist.

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) is a structured, long-term treatment program designed to help individuals reduce the impact and perception of tinnitus. Tinnitus is the sensation of ringing, buzzing, or other sounds in the ears with no external source. The procedure mainly consists of Directive Counselling and Sound Therapy. By TRT the patient reduces tinnitus-related stress, anxiety, or sleep issues.

TThe Routine Central Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory (CCL), located on the 4th floor of the OPD building, caters to both in-patient and out-patient diagnostic needs. Operating Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Saturdays until 1:00 p.m., it processes 400–600 samples daily. The laboratory offers a wide range of investigations including liver, renal, lipid, diabetic, and cardiac profiles, along with special biochemical, electrolyte, and fluid analyses using fully automated analyzers with a rapid turnaround time.

The Emergency Biochemistry Laboratory functions from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. on working days and provides 24×7 diagnostic support on weekends and public holidays. It ensures timely biochemical testing for critical and emergency cases with an average turnaround time of three hours.

The Undergraduate Laboratory (UG Lab) is well-equipped to accommodate 50 students at a time for practical sessions. It provides hands-on learning in biochemical estimations, enzyme assays, and clinical chemistry, integrating conceptual understanding with clinical application.

The Postgraduate and Research Laboratory (PG Lab) houses 20 individual workstations and supports postgraduate and PhD research activities. It is equipped for advanced biochemical and molecular investigations, dissertation work, and faculty-led research projects, fostering scientific inquiry and innovation.

The Departmental Library houses a rich collection of over 500 books spanning more than 400 distinct titles, covering diverse subjects such as biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, genetics, and laboratory techniques. It is regularly updated with the latest editions and reference materials to support both teaching and research activities. The library provides a comfortable seating arrangement for eight students at a time, offering a conducive environment for focused study and academic discussion.

The Research Laboratory is equipped to support advanced experimental and analytical work. In addition to the instruments available in the Central Clinical Laboratory, it houses specialized equipment such as a PCR system, cold centrifuge, high-speed centrifuge, magnetic stirrer, semi-auto analyzer, pH meter, electrophoresis and chromatography setups, oven, incubator, and other essential laboratory instruments. This facility enables faculty, postgraduate, and PhD researchers to conduct molecular, biochemical, and translational research with precision and reliability.

The department features a spacious lecture hall with a seating capacity of 150 students and two well-equipped seminar halls, each accommodating 50 participants. The department is a recognized PhD Research Centre under the Faculty of Medicine, affiliated with the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), for doctoral research in Medical Biochemistry. Admissions to the PhD program are conducted through the PhD Entrance Test (PET) as per the guidelines and regulations of MUHS.

General Haematology OPD is held twice week i.e. on Monday & Thursday from 8:30 am onwards. Thalassemia OPD is held on Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday from 8:30 am onwards. We get references from the other departments of Nair Hospital as well as from other Hospitals like Railway Hospitals, BPT Hospital, TATA Hospital, Cooper Hospital and other BMC peripheral Hospitals.

Male Haematology ward is situated in 4th floor of OPD Building. Patients with Haematological problems, chemotherapy and requiring Indoor care are admitted in this ward.

Drug levels of various anti-epileptic drugs viz., Phenytoin, Phenobarbitone, Carbamazepine, Ox-Carbamazepine, Valproate, Levetiracetam, Lamotrigine, Topiramate, Zonisamide, Lacosamide, Breviracetam, Clobazam from biological samples are estimated as part of TDM services. The M.Ch. CVTS program is a rigorous, three-year superspeciality training course designed to develop highly skilled surgeons in the field of cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgery. Residents gain comprehensive experience in adult cardiac surgery, thoracic and mediastinal surgery, aortic and vascular procedures, and peri-operative critical care. The Bachelor of Perfusion Technology (BPMT) program in the Department of CVTS provides comprehensive training in the science and practice of extracorporeal circulation and cardiopulmonary support. The course equips students with the knowledge and skills required to operate the heart–lung machine, manage cardiopulmonary bypass, assist in cardiac surgeries, and support various advanced circulatory support systems used in modern cardiac care. Students receive hands-on OT exposure, learning real-time perfusion techniques, priming and management of bypass circuits, anticoagulation monitoring, blood conservation strategies, cardioplegia delivery, and safe postoperative transitions. The curriculum combines teaching with supervised clinical rotations in the CVTS OT and ICU. DXA Scanner measures bone density and helps us evaluate Metabolic Bone Disease, and will be helpful in the assessment and prevention of Osteoporotic fractures. The DXA scanner also measures body composition, in addition to BMD. With the current refinements in Vertebral Fracture Assessment, Trabecular Bone Scoring, and Paediatric BMD, better assessment for patient care and research can be achieved. The DXA scan is done daily on an appointment basis from 9 am to 4 pm.

The Department is recognised for TWO DM Endocrinology registrations/year. The teaching sessions for DM students comprise: Discussions on cases/ topics related to Diabetes are held in the Diabetes Clinics. Other Endocrine topics are covered in discussions twice a week. The discussions may take the form of a review of the allotted topics or a journal review. A Collaborative Discussion of Thyroid patients and Topics related to thyroid is carried out with nuclear medicine, histopathologists and surgeons. Every month, all the Endocrinologists in Mumbai meet for an Intercollegiate Clinical meeting where interesting cases are presented and discussed. We participate in the clinical meetings of the other hospital departments, where cases with Endocrinologic diseases are presented. The Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy unit run by the department of surgery is situated in the premises of the Kasturba hospital. It is the oldest functioning unit for this mode of therapy in the city of Mumbai. Over the last three decades, this unit has provided HBOT to patients, not just from Nair hospital, but all other municipal and government hospitals in the city and any patient requiring HBOT from the private hospital and nursing homes as well. Department of General Surgery has recently acquired a new Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Chamber. It is managed by Dr Manmohan Bhagwat.

Dr Dnyaneshwar Mohare has a special interest in the surgery of complex hernia cases, helped by Dr Shantanu Navgale under the leadership of Dr S B Dharap

Stoma clinic offers care of temporary and permanent faecal and urinary stoma. Stoma bags are provided free or at a concessional rate to all patients. It is run by a trained stoma therapist.

All the units carry out operations for cancer - particularly breast, stomach, colon, pancreas, thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal. Adjuvant treatment is planned and coordinated with the medical oncology and radiotherapy department.

The laparoscope is a more recent technological advancement which gives us the ability to access the entire abdominal cavity as also the chest, to carry out even the most complex procedures which would otherwise require large incisions, through what is popularly knowm as ' Minimal Acess Surgery “ or “ Key Hole Surgery “. The department of surgery is able to offer the entire gamut of procedures that can be carried out through laparoscopy, to its patients. Advanced laproscopic surgery is conducted by Dr. S.B. Dharap & Dr. N. A. Borle.

Our ability to access the gastrointestinal tract by the insertion of flexible endoscope through natural orifices gives us the ability to diagnose and treat a multitude of diseases without wielding the knife. Both upper and lower GI endoscopic services are offered by the department which are conducted by Dr. D.J. Balsarkar & Dr. Sachin Suryavanshi.

Advanced care of diseases of the GI tract involves a high level of skill and specialization. The surgical unit headed by Dr. Satish B. Dharap & Dr, Nitin A. Borle serves the need for a committed GI surgery services specialty in the areas of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic surgery.

This service works in close association with the department of endocrinology. The diabetic foot care is offered by all surgical units. Modern wound care products including negative pressure wound therapy are available free of cost to all patients. Availability of Angiography and Interventional radiology facility in the department of radiology and hyperbaric oxygen facility at Kasturba hospital, has made it possible to to offer the comprehensive care to patients with foot complications as a result of diabetes. The service is recognised by Maharashtra University of Health sciences for post-doctoral fellowship.( One year course, Annual intake -1) .This service is run on every Friday under the leadership of Dr. Sudatta Waghmare.

The surgical service for diseases of the breast which was started in May 2013, is headed by Dr. Jayshri S. Pandya, with an outpatient department dedicated to breast disease. The O.P.D. is conducted every Wednesday between 1.00 p.m. & 4 p.m. The breast service holds regular camps at various locations with a view to increasing awareness about breast diseases, counseling and early diagnosis of those diseases that require early intervention. Regional Reproductive Tract Infections/Sexually Transmitted Infections Testing, Training, Research & Reference Laboratory (RSTRRL) is operational under National AIDS Control Organization since 2015. This laboratory offers Gram staining of discharge/ ulcer specimens from STI/RTI patients, ELISA tests for HBsAg, HCV, Chlamydia Antigen, HSV IgM for STI/ RTI patients. The Ophthalmic Ward is spacious, clean, well-ventilated, and organized to ensure patient comfort, safety, and efficient clinical management. It includes dedicated male and female inpatient sections, as well as a well equipped examination room with a slit lamp, Snellen’s chart, and an indirect ophthalmoscope. The ward is staffed by trained ophthalmic nursing personnel skilled in pre-operative and post-operative care, medication administration, visual assessment, and patient counseling. Additional facilities include a procedure room for minor interventions, a dressing room, a nursing station, and a waiting area for attendants. The ward operates round the clock, ensuring timely evaluation and management by ophthalmology residents and faculty.

The Ophthalmology Operation Theatre functions six days a week, with each clinical unit providing services on alternate days. It is a fully modular OT equipped with laminar airflow and HEPA filtration to ensure a sterile and controlled surgical environment. The community Ophthalmic services rendered to the slum population of Greater Mumbai is through the Mobile Van Services of our department to the Centers at Cheeta Camp. Regular operative sessions are also held in these Eye Camps with good visual outcome. The Mobile Ophthalmic Van Services are improvised by the installation of various portable Ophthalmic equipments within the van, all of which are donated by a number of voluntary organisations.

The centre, housed in five-storeyed building spanning 35,000 square feet, was proposed in 2018, with the first phase completed in 2023. Catering to children from 0 to 18 years of age, EIRCC provides its services entirely free of cost, ensuring accessibility to early intervention and rehabilitation support. Each floor of the building is designed with a unique child-friendly theme, creating a soothing and engaging environment to make the experience comfortable and less intimidating for children. Currently, the team includes a Pediatric Neurologist, Neurodevelopmental Pediatrician, three Child Psychiatrists, two Pediatric Ophthalmologists, two ENT specialists, five speech therapists, seven occupational therapists, seven physiotherapists, three special educators, five psychologists, three dentists, two Orthopedicians, and two community developmental officers, all having additional training in working with children and adolescents with special needs. By employing an integrated, interdisciplinary, and multidisciplinary approach, the center ensures that each child receives well-coordinated, comprehensive, and personalized care that addresses their unique needs holistically. Unlike other DEICs that typically serve children aged 0–6, this facility offers free rehabilitative services to children with special needs from birth to 18 years, following referrals from various hospitals, health centres and private clinicians. The entire center is designed in order to be child and disability friendly. It operates on a stratified step-care model and stands apart from public hospitals by focusing on quality over quantity, allocating between 45 minutes to one hour per session. With all therapies provided under one roof, it serves as a one-stop destination for families seeking comprehensive care. As of February 2025, the center has provided support to approximately 2,500 children with special needs, delivering around 45,000 specialized therapy sessions tailored to their requirements. In its second phase, plans include introducing additional services such as aqua-therapy, gait analysis lab, animal-assisted therapy, BERA testing, telemedicine support for remote centers, remedial education for children with learning disabilities, and an auditorium for therapy programs and specialist training. These enhancements have been approved by the Municipal Corporation of the city, with the necessary budget allocated, and are expected to be completed within the next year. It is a 3 year rigorous course involving training in clinical examination, investigations, assessments and comprehensive pharmacological, psychosocial management of psychiatric disorders.

This is a fellowship recognized by Maharashtra University Health Sciences. 8 Fellows are admitted every year. The duration is 1 year. Fellows are trained in skills in diagnosis and management of common childhood and adolescent psychiatric disorders.

Our digital X-ray unit provides fast, high-quality radiographic imaging with minimal radiation exposure. All routine and specialized X-rays including chest, musculoskeletal, spine, trauma views, and pediatric imaging are performed with efficient workflow and immediate digital image availability.

The ultrasound section features high-frequency, color Doppler–enabled machines offering real-time imaging for abdominal, pelvic, obstetric, musculoskeletal, thyroid, breast, and vascular studies.
