As T.N.Medical College & B.Y.L.Nair Ch. Hospital celebrates its centenary year, the Department of Anaesthesiology completes 50 years. Established in 1967 with Dr Janak Mehta as its Head, the Department has progressed in every aspect. What began as a tiny department with four faculty members and four residents is today the largest with 26 faculty members, 67 residents and 5 ancillary staff. It is also well equipped with advanced technology for its clinical and academic goals. The department provides Anesthesia, Critical care and Pain services for 35 surgery tables, 2 PACUs, 1 Trauma ICU and runs 1 Anesthesia and 1 Pain OPD. The Department has a well equipped laboratory with facilities for PFTs, ABG, Electrolytes and PT/PI, a library and a museum.
The advancement in surgery goes hand in hand with sophisticated anaesthesia. The Anesthesiology Department has contributed significantly to the development of various surgical specialities like Cardiothoracic & Neurosurgery, Pediatric and Neonatal Surgery, Stereotactic and Radio-interventional surgery, Microvascular surgery, Laser surgery, Laparoscopic surgery, etc. Anaesthesia for Maxillo-facial & Pediatric Dental surgery is a special skill of the Nair Anesthesiology department.
All the Department Heads, each a Stalwart has left an indelible mark resulting in many firsts to the department credit. Dr Janak Mehta (1967-1973) was the anaesthetist when Dr Dastur performed the first-ever open-heart cardiac surgery in India at our beloved Alma Mater in 1961. The first MD exam in Anaesthesiology of Mumbai University was held in Nair in 1968. Dr Vasumati Divekar (1973-1991), established the Post Anesthesia care unit in 1975 and Pre-anesthesia OPD in 1982, the first of its kind in Mumbai. Madam still works as the Chairman of the Ethics committee at Nair. Dr Indula Panchal madam's (1991-2000) untiring efforts gave our hospital a fully equipped Acute Respiratory Care Unit and the first multidisciplinary pain clinic in 1988. She was the founder member research society and continued as a member till 2017. She also introduced the concept of continuing medical education and conducted the first anaesthesia CME in Mumbai at Nair Auditorium. Dr Beena Kamdar (2000-2003) kept the tradition alive and the Nair Anesthesia CME is a much-awaited and well attended annual event. Dr Pradnya Kadam (2003-2005) was actively involved and coordinated with various surgical specialities to finalize the design and equipment procurement for the New OT complex of the OPD building. During the tenure of Dr Hemlata Iyer, (2005-2011) our department was awarded the prestigious ISO certification. The department was amongst the first in Nair Hospital and the first anesthesiology department in Mumbai to get ISO accreditation. She was also the anesthesiologist for the separation of conjoint twins and was instrumental in starting education programs for the nursing staff. Dr Pinakin Gujjar (2011-2019) with his excellent administrative skills worked for the all-around betterment and progress of the department as well as the welfare of the faculty.
The Heads were ably supported by luminous faculty like Dr S.S.Mehta, Dr Anupama Katre, Dr Lalita Naik, Dr Shubha Mohite, Dr Roopa Sharma, Dr Vandana Trasy, Dr Vandana Laheri, Dr Alka Habe, Dr Manju Gandhi, Dr Manjiri Muzumdar, Dr Indrani H. who contributed immensely to department progress in academics. We boast of alumni who head Departments of Anaesthesiology, Critical Care and Super-speciality in anaesthesiology in India & worldwide. The department has produced many leading cardiac, neuro and pediatric anesthesiologists and pain specialists of repute. Dr Garach was awarded the lifetime achievement award by the Indian Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anesthesiologists in 2020 and had the privilege to anaesthetize our past PM Dr Manmohan Singh.
The department runs excellent teaching activities, weekly department meetings as well as CMEs, and has maintained a high standard of anaesthesia. Many of our residents have secured the first rank in the University postgraduate examination and have excelled in various competitions held during anesthesiology conferences or paper presentations. Many of our faculty members have been awarded prestigious fellowships to train abroad.
We have been proactive where community outreach is involved. Our staff and alumni volunteered for the rehabilitation of victims during the Kutch earthquake, for providing anaesthesia services for cleft lip & palate surgeries of Smile Train and various other surgery camps for the poor. Training medical & paramedical staff and people from different sections of society in Cardio-Pulmonary-Cerebral Resuscitation is done regularly by the department as part of its social responsibility. Many of our past students educate the public regarding anesthesiology in print or public media.
Once a Nazirite, Always a Nazirite. Our alumni have supported their Alma Mater in a big way whenever possible in terms of donation of equipment, books and participating in academic events.
Our department has believed in maintaining a work-life balance. There are regular picnics or get-togethers organized where hierarchy is forgotten and memories are created. The fresher's welcome is conducted with much enthusiasm. Such is the bonding and camaraderie that the 50th reunion was attended by alumni all over the world.
During the pandemic, the department was at the forefront of the war against Covid infections. The department competently managed critical patients in 4 Covid ICUs and provided anaesthesia to more than 750 Covid positive patients. The residents of the department worked tirelessly round the clock in Covid wards. We also provided 24-hour anaesthesia service for patients of Mucor Mycosis.
A Journey of a thousand miles begins with a small step.it has been every small step by every member that has helped us leap into this centenary year.
