The dept of Nephrology runs National Medical Commission recognized DM Nephrology course.
The intake capacity has been increased to 3 students per year from 2021-22 onwards.
OPD : General Nephrology [ 2 OPDs/wk ] , Kidney Transplant Recipient & Donor follow up OPD, CAPD clinic, Vascular Clinic, Kidney Transplant Donor & Recipient ( pre surgery ) evaluation.

History & Progress of the dept over years :
Dr V V Shanbhag; pioneer of Nephrology in these twin institutes, initiated Peritoneal dialysis services in 1974, when he was Professor & Head, Artificial Kidney Division ( AKD), with 5 Hemodialysis machines, was started on 22 January 1982. First Live Related Kidney Transplantation was performed in 1983-84. Dept of Nephrology was separated from General Medicine dept in 1984, with Dr V V Shanbhag as Professor & Head, Nephrology.
Dr A R Halankar took over as Prof & Head, Nephrology in 1992. CIPD was practiced in early nineties by the dept. During his tenure, he expanded hemodialysis services further to 8 dialysis stations. AKD , Intensive Kidney Care Unit , General Nephrology beds were now housed on 6th floor of Hospital building. First Diseased Donor Kidney Transplantation was done during his tenure, in 1997. He initiated DNB Nephrology in 2001.
Dr Kalpana Mehta was selected as Professor & Head : Nephrology in 2003 & is privileged to continue heading the dept till to date. Hemodialysis services were made functional 24X7 from 2005. The dept , since 2009, with office & 42 beds [ inclusive of 12 AKD , 5 Intensive Kidney care unit, 5 Kidney Transplant Room & 20 General Nephrology] ; is now permanently located on 7th floor of OPD building. DNB Nephrology course continued during this period, till 2012. Fellowship courses in Clinical Nephrology & Dialysis Medicine; affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences were initiated in 2010 & 2011, respectively. The dept has been approved for DM Nephrology by Medical Council of India in 2012 & has been enrolling students since 2013 onwards. From 2021-22, the dept has been permitted to increase its intake capacity to 3.
USG guided Kidney biopsy & placement of Tunneled cuffed catheters under USG guidance in the dept by Nephrology faculties & residents , CAPD [ Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis ] for ESKD are regular features since 2014 onwards.
Nair Hospital has been involved in yearly National level Nephrology mock examinations since 2017 till 2020. We could not do it in 2021 & 2022 due to COVID. Around 14 to 15 national level examiners & experts in Nephrology are involved in 2 days marathon sessions ; in 2 separate halls with 3 sessions per day in each hall. Around 100 to 120 DM /DNB Nephrology students from all over India attended it.
The dept of Nephrology played a very vital role during COVID 19 pandemic. The dept was able to provide 5260 hemodialysis sessions to 662 COVID positive patients, till 21st Jan 2022 & is still continuing. We are one of the very few centers in the world, probably the only one, to have performed so many COVID positive dialysis.
On 3rd March 2020, the dept performed ,successfully, ABO incompatible live related [ Spouse ]Kidney Transplantation, First Ever in Public Health Institutes of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai.
Today, Nair Nephrology dept is well equipped with 18 dialysis machines running 24 X 7, 17 dialysis technicians,18 Staff Nurses, Recognized Kidney Transplant center, apt to handle all types of Nephrology cases, including USG guided kidney biopsies & dialysis catheter placement, running NMC approved DM Nephrology course, with publications in National & International journals, with its faculties as invitees for National CMEs.
