Department of Skin and V.D.

History :

  • Skin & STDs Department was started in 1944 as an offshoot of the Dept. of Medicine. In the seventies, the Department shot into prominence under the leadership of Dr. T.K. Mehta and Dr. Leslie Marquis who served as Editors of the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology & Leprology for extended periods. The spirit of 'together we progress' was inculcated in the department by Dr. Marquis and was continued later by Dr. S.S. Trasi, Dr. S. L. Wadhwa, Dr. S. T. Amladi, Dr. R. S. Dhurat and now under Dr. Chitra S. Nayak who currently holds the post of Professor & Head.

  • First comprehensive Diagnostic Dermatopathology referral centre catering to Mumbai and outside from 1998-2002.
  • First dermatological Day Care unit in Municipal hospitals in Mumbai since 2000.
  • First and only dedicated daily Paediatric and Adolescent Dermatology Outpatient Service in all teaching hospitals in India, started in March 2003.

  • The department has a full fledged minor operation theater where many minor procedures are done on Wednesday 12.30 pm to 2.30 pm.
Vitiligo surgeries including punch grafting, suction blister grafting, local dermabrasion, Melanocyte transfer
Acne surgeries  comedone extraction, subcision, chemical peels, Dermaroller.
Excision and biopsy various benign swellings like appendageal tumors, tattoo excision, sebaceous cyst excision, steatocystoma multiplex excision.
Nail surgery: biopsy and therapeutic
Cryosurgery Done on Friday with prior appointment , for various lesions like keloids, warts, acne keloidalis nuchae, hypertrophic lichen planus
Electrosurgery  Done on Wednesday for warts, granuloma pyogenicum, DPN
Radiofrequency surgery Botox Aesthetic Surgeries           Done on Friday for warts on face,  DPN, seborrheic keratosis, skin tags, verrucous epidermal nevus and electroepilation
Autologous fat transfer, local liposuction, hair transplant


  • Intense Pulsed Light Therapy (IPL):
    Services available on Friday between 11.00 am to 12.00 pm for hirsutism, pigmented lesions, vascular lesions
  • Phototherapy (Ultraviolet Light) Therapy:
    • Ultraviolet light therapy unit is used for treatment of common skin problems like psoriasis and vitiligo. The light can be taken on Wednesday and Saturday between 8.30 am and 12.30 pm and is of two types: PUVA Therapy & UVB Therapy.
  • PUVA Therapy:
    PUVA (Psoralen with UltraViolet A) therapy involves exposure to ultraviolet A light after ingesting psoralen tablets. The department is equipped with several PUVA units (Full body, hand & foot) that cater to all types of patients. A nominal charge of Rs. 10/- per session partly covers the maintenance of the chamber.
  • UVB Therapy:
    The Full Body UVB Phototherapy Chamber delivers Narrow Band UVB light. It has several advantages over PUVA therapy & is virtually free from side effects. Hence, it has been advocated in the treatment of skin diseases in elderly, pregnant and lactating women, and older children. A nominal charge of Rs. 25/- per session partly covers the maintenance of the chamber.
  • Day Care Centre:
    • This Day Care facility adjacent to the main Skin OPD (OPD No. 14) is open from 8.30 am to 1.00 pm and is furnished with three beds.
    • A Resident doctor, a nurse take care of patients under the supervision of senior staff members. The centre is used for pre- & post-procedure care, pain management, dressings, intravenous pulse therapy, etc
  • Dermatopathology Services:
  • Skin biopsy is particularly important for patients who do not show good response to initial treatment. Expert dermatopathology advice is available to all patients from Nair Hospital.
  • A type written report is issued within a few days.
  • The department is equipped with a multiheaded teaching microscope with photomicrography equipment and a high-resolution monitor that allows case discussion between doctors.

  • Clinicopathologic Correlation Clinic:
    Dermatopathology is practiced in a patient oriented manner through the conduction of this clinic in which every patient and the biopsy slide are studied together. The clinic is held every Tuesday and Thursday between 2.00 pm - 3.30 pm.
  • Special Care Dermatology OPD:
    All patients who need long-term treatment and follow up are given special attention in this clinic. Their records are entered into the computer. All patients who follow up for PUVA therapy, UVB therapy and pulse therapy are also followed up here.
  • STD & HIV Care Facilities:
    Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are a group of infections that are transmitted by sexual contact. Expert help in diagnosis and treatment of these infections is available on all OPD days. Control of STDs is a social priority as they facilitate spread of HIV infection.

    Testing for HIV infection (with pre-test and post-test counseling) is available in the department for patients who are found to be at high-risk of contracting HIV infection. For those found to be infected HIV infection, a comprehensive health care facility staffed by physicians, skin & STD specialists and a counselor is available on Wednesdays at 10.30 am.
    Our department is attached to MDACS and provides presumptive treatment for STDs at first visit.

  • All investigations and procedures are done on appointment basis
