About the Department

History:

We all know that Sushruta started Plastic Surgery in India many centuries back. It is only after the Second World War did plastic surgery started the second phase of development in the world and in India.

The Department of Plastic Surgery was established on the Republic day in 1964 at Topiwala National Medical College and B. Y. L. Nair Hospital. In 1972 it became a full-fledged department with 16 beds with Dr. S. M. Mahaluxmivala as a Professor and Head of the Department. Dr. Narendra Pandya, after receiving his broad based training in plastic surgery in the UK and USA became the next Head and retired in 1990. He was followed by Dr. (Miss) N. R. Lalwani.

Dr. Amresh Baliarsing took over the reins as the head in 2007. Under his leadership, the department saw the establishment of the Clinical Skills Laboratory in 2012 as a cadaveric dissection laboratory and Nair Multispeciality Library and resource center in 2018.

Dr. Uday Bhat is the current head of the department from November 2018. Under him, the department provided a yeoman service during the Covid19 pandemic, and saw the upgradation of the clinical skills laboratory in September 2021. At present the department has a bed strength of 30 beds and 4 Senior Residents for MCh Plastic Surgery course per year. Besides this, we also run the burns unit at Kasturba hospital. Presently, the department has the following faculty members:

Academic Activity

Academic activities:

     Our department has been at the forefront in organizing Masterclasses in Aesthetic Surgery, to provide residents across the nation an opportunity to learn the same. With mavens like Dr. Carlos Roxo, Dr. Thomas Biggs. Dr. Andre Auersvald, and pioneers like Dr. Manfred Frey holding these classes, these classes have been immensely popular with the residents and faculty alike.

With the Covid19 pandemic disrupting the routine teaching activities at most institutes across the country, our department along with the SchoolPhi team took up the mantle of organizing online classes and clinics for all plastic surgery residents. Currently in the third year since its inception, these classes have been the biggest such programme in our country, with more than 50 classes per year with faculty and students all over India participating in it.


    Our residents have consistently been performing well in the MUHS examinations and have been amongst the top three rankers in the state. Flap dissection course was organized regularly in the department.

Achievements and Recent Developments

      Department of Plastic Surgery has established the Clinical Skills Laboratory with state of art operation theatre and dissection hall, advanced audiovisual system, deep freeze facility to preserve cadavers to learn and practice various operative procedures so as to develop and improve surgical skills of residents.

   Nair Multispecialty Library and Resource Centre has been established at Nair Hospital in 2020. This is deemed-to-be a National level library and resource centre and doctors all over the country will have access to the library to seek information about various fields. We have already acquired 500 books and journals and are aiming to reach a target of about 4000 books, atlases, e-books, DVD/CD of operative procedures related to plastic surgery.


Dr. Narendra Pandya was awarded the Pioneer in Cosmetic Surgery in India and A Lifetime Achievement Award in Cosmetic Surgery. He is the only plastic surgeon to be decorated by the President of India with a distinguished rank of "Honorary Surgeon Commodore".


Dr. Amresh Baliarsing was awarded the Peet Prize of Association of Plastic surgeons of India in November 2012 for the original paper on Mandible Reconstruction with Double Barrel Fibula Flap".




   We, at the department of Plastic Surgery have developed a technique of cartilage carving called NHPC, or Nair Hospital Precision Carving technique, which is used to perform Rhinoplasty or Nose job. This technique has been pioneered by Dr. Uday Bhat. Department of Plastic Surgery, Nair Hospital has acquired Carbon dioxide, Diode, and Multiplatform laser for better patient care.

     Dr. Uday Bhat, Professor and Head, won the award for Best Publication in the reputed journal Indian Journal of Plastic Surgery for Three component cartilage framework reconstruction for correction of post traumatic nasal septal collapse.

     Dr. Amresh Baliarsing became the President of the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India in 2019.

   Dr. Amit Peswani, Assistant Professor and Dr. Uday Bhat have contributed to the chapter on Structural consideration in Rhinoplasty in Textbook of Aesthetic, Plastic and reconstructive Surgery.

    We have been presenting papers at various national and international conferences over the years and have won many prizes. Dr. Abhijeet Sawant won the prize for best Audiovisual presentation at APSICON 2018.
