Dr. Mala V. Kaneria has done her entire medical schooling from Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College and Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital (Sion Hospital) and is thereafter faculty at Nair Hospital, Mumbai, since 1994 i.e. almost  28 years. She is presently Professor and Unit Head at Nair Hospital, in the Department of Medicine and also a Professor and Unit Head at Kasturba Hospital for Infectious Diseases.

Her area of expertise is Infectious Diseases, Tropical Medicine and HIV Medicine. She has vast experience in and special interest in treating monsoon related illnesses (such as malaria, dengue, leptospirosis, enteric fever, acute undifferentiated fevers), pyrexia of unknown origin, tuberculosis (both pulmonary and extra pulmonary),  parasitic infections (like neurocysticercosis), chikungunya, opportunistic infections in HIV patients,difficult to treat bacterial infections due to multi drug resistant organisms, infections in solid organ and bone marrow transplant recipients, fungal infections such as mucormycosis, COVID 19 and post COVID 19 infections.

By virtue of being faculty at Kasturba Hospital and Nair Hospital, which was declared a Dedicated COVID Hospital during the pandemic, she has treated hundreds of COVID patients and has even guided the MCGM in making protocols and guidelines.

She is the recipient of many awards such as the prestigious M. J. Shah award for the best correspondence in JAPI, best paper presentation on the Utility of Procalcitonin as a biomarker at the APICON, winner of the sponsorship for a research on Clostridiodes difficile infection by the MAHAISG, first prize at the exit examination in Infectious Diseases, COVID warrior award by MCGM, Rotary award for her exemplary service during the pandemic, etc.

She has participated as faculty and delivered many talks on various topics in infectious diseases at various forums. She updates her knowledge and skills regularly by attending national and international conferences.

She is the author of more than 80 publications in peer reviewed, indexed medical journals and has authored many textbook chapters.

She is a member of many professional bodies including Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), Clinical Infectious Diseases Society of India, HIS-MF, MAHAISG, ECCMID, The Journal of Association of Physicians of India (JAPI) and is on the advisory board of JAPI. She is a core committee member of the  CovidRxExchange which is a global nonprofit organization focused on disseminating medical expertise and insight on the management of Covid-19/Active since March/April 2020. She has guided the Biotechnology Department of IIT B on various projects.

She is an MUHS recognised undergraduate and postgraduate teacher and has guided more than 25 students with their thesis topics. She is also an MUHS recognised examiner for Fellowship Examination in Infectious Diseases.

She is a keen researcher and has been actively involved in multiple clinical trials and projects.

She also heads the Geriatric Medicine OPD which runs on Thursdays from 10 am to 12.30 pm.

Her medical OPD is on Wednesdays from 9am to 12.30 pm. (MVK Unit)
